Why study HSK 1 here instead of an Anki deck?

If you've searched for "anki deck for hsk 1 vocab" you've probably seen a few.apkg files floating around. They work — but they come with friction: you need to install Anki, sync the deck to your phone, and figure out Anki's interface. This page does the same job in a browser tab, with the same audio recordings (sourced from open Anki HSK decks), plus example sentences and English translations on every word.

A 3-week HSK 1 study plan

  1. Week 1 — Recognition. Read through the full 150-word list on /hsk-1. Play the audio for each word. Don't try to memorize — just get familiar with how the characters and pinyin look and sound.
  2. Week 2 — Active recall. Launch HSK 1 flashcards. Grade each card Honestly (Again / Hard / Good / Easy). The system will show you the words you forget more often. Aim for 10–15 minutes a day.
  3. Week 3 — Test yourself. Take HSK 1 quizzes and listening practice to confirm you can both recognize characters and identify words by ear. Most students pass HSK 1 after this stage.

The whole plan takes about 5–10 hours total — most learners can comfortably pass HSK 1 within 3 weeks of starting from zero.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are in HSK 1?
HSK 1 contains 150 words under the HSK 3.0 (2021) vocabulary list. These are the most basic Mandarin words — mostly pronouns, common verbs, numbers, and high-frequency particles like 我 (wǒ, I), 你 (nǐ, you), 是 (shì, to be), and 八 (bā, eight).
Do I need to pay for this HSK 1 vocabulary list?
No. Every word, audio recording, pinyin, and example sentence on this page is available — no signup, no download, no Anki account required. You can study the full list online and start practicing with flashcards in under 30 seconds.
How is this different from an HSK 1 Anki deck?
An Anki deck is a downloadable.apkg file you open in the Anki desktop or mobile app. This page is web-based: you can read every HSK 1 word, play the native audio, and review with spaced repetition directly in your browser. Same content (the audio is sourced from open Anki decks), no install required.
Does this list include native Mandarin audio?
Yes. 150 of the 150 HSK 1 words on this page have a real native-speaker MP3 recording — not synthesized text-to-speech. Click any ▶ button to hear the word pronounced.
What's the best way to memorize HSK 1 vocabulary?
Use spaced repetition. Read the word and pinyin, listen to the audio, then grade yourself on whether you remembered it. Our flashcard mode does exactly this — it schedules words you forget more often and words you know less often, so you memorize all 150 HSK 1 words in roughly 5–10 hours of practice spread over 2–3 weeks.
Do I need to know characters or just pinyin for HSK 1?
The HSK 1 exam tests both simplified Chinese characters and pinyin. You should be able to recognize the character, read the pinyin, and know the English meaning. This page shows all three for every word so you can practice them together.
